Would not change, or did not persist?  That's a key difference.  Everything
changes for me, but if I reconfigure the data source, its at default values.
 (Despite the fact that the data is stored in the files the right way.)

I didn't even bother to check them as they worked before.  I'll have to
figure out what subtle thing I changed.  What's worse is that this appears
to work on windows.  I'm going to guess its related to the same reason the
writes were failing, just in the opposite direction.  Luckily, its easy
enough for me to fix.
